Description
Celebrate the dual centennial of Miles Davis and John Coltrane with The Complete Columbia Recordings 1955–1961, a landmark collection documenting one of the most influential small bands in jazz history.
Between 1955 and 1961, Miles Davis led extraordinary quintet and sextet sessions featuring tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, pianists Red Garland, Bill Evans, and Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummers Philly Joe Jones and Jimmy Cobb.
Originally produced by Michael Cuscuna and Bob Belden in 2000, this collection features 58 tracks spanning such essential Davis albums as 'Round About Midnight, Milestones, Jazz at the Plaza, Someday My Prince Will Come, and the legendary Kind of Blue. It also includes Davis and Coltrane performances from Miles and Monk at Newport, Birth of the Blue, Basic Miles, and Circle in the Round, along with 18 additional tracks that were previously unreleased before 2000 and unavailable elsewhere.
9LP - The original box set won two Grammy Awards for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package and Best Album Notes. Previously available on vinyl only as a highly limited Mosaic Records edition, this 9LP reissue makes the collection widely available for the first time.
The set features vinyl cut directly from the original analog tapes by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, along with a beautifully designed 60-page adaptation of the original book. The accompanying publication includes rare photography, essays by original producer George Avakian and Kind of Blue drummer Jimmy Cobb, Grammy-winning liner notes by critic Bob Blumenthal, a timeline and additional notes by Cuscuna and Belden, and the original Kind of Blue liner notes by pianist Bill Evans.
